Ami Suzuki initially won her contract with Sony Music in 1997 through a TV contest and debuted 2 years later under the name (pronounced Suzuki Ami). With Tetsuya Komuro writing, arranging and producing most of her material, Suzuki was so much of a success on the charts that the media set her and Ayumi Hamasaki as rivals.

In 2000, due to the fact that Sony president, Eiji Yamada, was involved in a tax evasion scheme, Suzuki and her parents filed a lawsuit against her management to free her of her contract. Although she won the lawsuit against her management, she was blacklisted from the music industry as no one was willing to promote her, and her contract with Sony did not officially end until December 2004.

Soon after, Suzuki began her own indie label, Amity and released two singles. Both of the singles were received with moderate success. In January 2005, she was signed to a new record deal with Avex Trax. This record deal officially ended her blacklisting from the music industry and she re-debuted soon after under the name (same pronunciation, but different writing). Since then, Suzuki has collaborated with different composers and producers through the Ami Suzuki joins project, which is when she released her first single with Yasutaka Nakata, Free - Super Music Maker. She went on to collaborate with Nakata on her 10th anniversary album, Supreme Show.
